Classroom Observation Tool and Feedback System

Dimensions of Success for Middle Grades Learning Engineering and Science

A National Science Foundation (NSF) Funded Project

The Dimensions of Success for Middle Grades Learning Engineering and Science (DoS-MiddLES) project aims to create and implement a sustainable and scalable classroom observation and feedback system for middle school science and engineering teachers.

DoS-MiddLES will align with evidence-based standards for science and engineering; integrate aspects of resilience and thriving skills for all students; and provide educators with actionable strategies for continuous learning and growth.

The project goals include:

  1. Develop and test the DoS-MiddLES observation tool

  2. Establish a video scoring method

  3. Create profiles of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) quality for schools and districts

  4. Develop and implement a training program for teachers and staff

Extending the DoS tool, initially established for informal science learning settings, to middle grades will support and advance educational practice, enhance research and evaluation infrastructure, and improve the STEM education field.

By promoting high-quality science and engineering learning for all students inside and outside of school, the expanded DoS framework will strengthen efforts across sectors and help communities provide the inspiration, knowledge, and skills youth need to thrive in the workforce and in life.
